YMLP History

The YMLP (Young Men’s Leadership Project) was initiated in 2006 by Peace Corps volunteers, in part to balance the question, “What about the young men of Macedonia?” In 2011, YMCA partnered with Peace Corps volunteers by refocusing its mission “to develop the core values of social inclusion, commitment to democratic processes, and civic engagement in the emerging male leaders of the country in an inter-cultural environment while providing them with the personal and professional life skills that will make them effective and responsible citizens.”

The National Leadership Camp evolved into the Young Men’s Leadership Project, developing its program, activities and structure. These changes have led to the creation of new project goals in camp youth development. The core curriculum of the Young Men’s Leadership Project was modified to align with the newly set goals. These changes can be seen in the new objectives for the goals of the camp.

These kinds of changes have rerouted the aim of the camp, to make this year’s camp better and distinctly different from previous years. The National Leadership Camp (and later known as YMLP) was created in a format of a 7-day, 6-night residential camping experience for 50-100 (this number of campers has varied through the years) boys aged 15-18 from different social, ethnic and cultural backgrounds across the country.

WHO DO WE WORK WITH?

Info graphic from the survey at Camp GLOW 2018

GLOW History

Camp GLOW began in Romania in 1995. Three Peace Corps Volunteers and four Romanian teachers took 80 young women to a mountain campsite for a week long leadership camp… Since that first camp in Romania, Peace Corps has actively supported Camp GLOW in other Peace Corps countries… In each country Peace Corps Volunteers and host-country nationals adapt Camp GLOW to reflect the realities of the young women in their local communities. While the content and styles of Camp GLOW vary, certain principles and themes exist through all the camps. These principles and themes include developing leadership skills, improving self esteem, increasing knowledge of women’s health issues, respecting and caring for the environment, and promoting the belief that every young woman can make a difference in their community.

In 2000, Peace Corps Volunteers in North Macedonia determined there was a need for Camp GLOW after informally leading groups of young women in their communities. This project was first realized in the form of a three-day seminar facilitated by Peace Corps Volunteers and Host Country Nationals. Over the years, it has evolved into a week long summer program coupled with local clubs promoting the values and knowledge gained from attending the camp. The participants come from all over the country, representing the ethnic and cultural diversity of the country. At GLOW, campers develop skills in teamwork and leadership that they will carry with them into adulthood. As a result, these young women are prepared to lead the country in a positive direction in the future. GLOW has operated in North Macedonia since 2002 in various locations and has been partnered with YMCA Bitola since 2015.

PEACEMAKERS GLOBAL WEEK – YOUTH, PEACE AND SECURITY

Are you interested in global issues and want to learn more about what you can do to work for more just world? Do you want to meet young people from around the world and discuss important issues such as peace, poverty and injustice together with them? Then Global Week is for you!

Global Week is YWCA-YMCA Global’s summer leadership training course!

Every summer around 50 young people gather in Norway for a week of discussions, learning, action and exciting meetings.  With participants from 11 countries, Global Week is really a place to get a feeling of how small the world is.  When young people from different parts of the world come together and get to know each other, we get a better understanding of how the world works and how, together, we can work for justice and peace.  If you are between 18-30 you can participate in Global Week.

The theme for Global Week 2019 is Youth, Peace and Security.  Maybe you think that its only political leaders who can change the word? Or that only staff in a big organization can run campaigns.  That’s of course not true.  It might sound like a cliché, but it starts with you.  At Global Week 2019 we will talk about what we can do to make the world a better place, both for those around us and for young people in other countries.  We’ll learn how to develop a campaign, how to get young people involved and how we can use music or social media to work for a more just world.

The week culminates with a campaign day where participants can use their newly learned skills in achieving the best results. Being part of Global Week is important because we live in a world with huge challenges, which we as young people can overcome. Video from the last years exchange can be seen here.

For the Macedonians are available 4 placements. Applicants will be given possibility to attend based on the principle ‘first come first served’ until the places are filled, with the priority given to the ones having been part of our GLOW&YMLP camps and clubs. For this reason, a CV will be asked from the applicants showing interest on our mail. For further applicants, a waiting list will be created and if someone cancels in the meantime, the next on the list will fill the emptied position, for which it will be notified. Always check your mail to see if you are that person!
