Applications for the “Empowering Summer Camp Youth Leaders” Program are now OPEN!
Empowering Summer Camp Youth Leaders (ESYL for short) is a short training course, hosted by YMCA Netherlands, to strengthen the YMCA summer camp work in Europe. The training course takes place from 9–13 of May, and is located on one of the national camp sites of YMCA Netherlands in Leusden, in the middle of The Netherlands.
There are 2 goals for the training: First of all there is the goal to strengthen the YMCA summer camp work in Europe, by sharing knowledge with each other, learning new ideas, methods and games from each other. The second goal is to see if we can start to make some sort of ‘YMCA standard’ for European summer camps from the YMCA. Making a standard means that we start making a rough guideline what you offer as YMCA when you organize summer camps, what it is to make sure you offer quality that fits within the YMCA, and what you need to reach that quality. Some of the countries involved in this project have been organizing summer camps for quite a long time, and there are also countries who have just (re)started with summer camping with their organization.
The training course is for volunteers and/or youth workers who organize summer camps, or want to learn how to organize summer camps. The age of the participants should be between 17 and 30. The call is open for all youth who is enthusiastic about camping. YMCA Bitola will give special consideration to those who have leadership positions in GLOW and YMLP Camps.

Clubs GLOW & YMLP are result of the successful partnership between YMCA Bitola and Peace Corps.
The GLOW and YMLP clubs service projects in 2018 have been supported by:
Grant from European Endowment for Democracy
Our corporate partners: OKTA as gold sponsor, SASA mine and Tinex as silver sponsors,
Alkaloid, Pekabesko and Zikol as bronze sponsors
Our corporate supporters: TAV Airports, EVN, and NOVA Schools.
And from lots of individual donors who fully support our cause and the mission of our youth development program via our crowd funding campaign.
This program since the very beginning has been supported by the US Embassy.
This is the forth year in a row we organize the GLOW and YMLP camps recognition ceremony where we invite about fifty corporate social partners to join and share our story of camps.
During the event, we share our gratitude to our corporate partners who have been with us sponsoring the camps program, but also investing in the education of young people and future leaders of Macedonia.
For those who are coming at the event for the first time , we provide opportunity to inform them about two superb youth leadership programs in Macedonia, the GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) and YMLP (Young Men’s Leadership Project) camps.
Thus far, both YMLP and GLOW have relied heavily on U.S. Embassy funding. For these programs to become sustainable, the necessary support must come from Macedonia’s companies. The corporate representatives have the opportunity to: 1) demonstrate their corporate social responsibility; 2) build good will for their company and the products and services they provide; and 3) create a legacy in developing the future leaders of Macedonia, by being a camp sponsor.
At the event the guests have opportunity to listen former campers about their experiences at camp and how GLOW and YMLP have helped them to shape their personality and to become individuals who are today – active, engaged, and confident Macedonian leaders. These are the Macedonia’s bright and inspiring leaders for the future. Investing in GLOW and YMLP is investing in the future of Macedonia.
The event so far have taken place at the residence of the USA Ambassador in Macedonia who is a great supporter, friend and guest at our camps. This year we will organize the event in hotel Park in Skopje. The event is hosted by YMCA Bitola and our main partner Peace Corps Macedonia.
Macedonia is a small country with big potential. In this young country coping with long-standing ethnic and economic divisions, opportunities are limited for the youth of Macedonia. The young people here need experience in leadership and a deeper dedication to cross-cultural understanding for a brighter future.
Since 2002, YMCA Bitola strives to empower the youth of Macedonia by creating opportunities in non-formal education so they can develop their inherent potential. A large part of YMCA Bitola’s efforts to achieve this goal is focused on Camps Girls Leading Our World (GLOW) and Young Men’s Leadership Project (YMLP). Every year, with the help of Peace Corps Volunteers, YMCA Bitola hosts these eight-day camps that give 160 young men and women from all walks of life and every corner of Macedonia the tools to become active leaders in their communities, break down cultural barriers, and create positive change for their own futures.
Both GLOW and YMLP provide an unparalleled chance for the youth of Macedonia to gain hands-on experience leading others while learning about civic responsibility, leadership, women’s empowerment, personal development, environmentalism and youth employability skills in a one-of-a-kind, American-style summer camp. In addition to providing an unforgettable week for these campers, GLOW and YMLP have proven they make a meaningful impact on Macedonia.
– 9 of 10 campers said that they will volunteer and are better prepared to be leaders in their communities
– 9 of 10 campers reported that as a result of camp, they had made a lasting relationship with someone from another ethnic group
– 9 of 10 campers said that they understand the importance of taking care of the environment and
– 8 of 10 campers said that they plan to involve more in the GLOW & YMLP program as staff, club member or join a civic organization.
The majority of campers returned home and developed 17 GLOW and YMLP service clubs around the country from the ground up, reaching over 300 youth in Macedonia. These campers make their communities better!
YMCA Bitola invests $282 USD in every camper’s experience. But through efficient budgeting and generous corporate and community support, YMCA Bitola is proud to make these camps available to the youth of Macedonia for less than $35 USD each. In other words, campers pay only 12% participation and 88% of the costs are covered by the corporate partners.
To make these camps sustainable for years to come, we need your help! We need to invest in the infrastructure of the camp and strengthen our resources so we can continue to provide these wonderful opportunities for the youth of Macedonia. We are asking for your support to raise 7% of our total budget for the 2019 GLOW and YMLP Camps.
Every dollar helps! We are looking forward to your partnership in empowering the youth of Macedonia!
The GLOW & YMLP Impact Summit is a national event in which GLOW and YMLP clubs leaders come together and share their positive practices in working on service projects back in their own communities, inspire each other and learn new skills they can become agents of change to make a greater impact back home.
The goal of the event is to bring staff and campers alumni from the GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) and YMLP (Young Men Leadership Project) camps together to highlight the service the campers and staff completed in their home communities both in their local GLOW or YMLP clubs and alone.
The event is also a great way to bring the staff and campers from GLOW and YMLP together to talk and share about what everyone has been doing since camp in the summer. The invitation is extended to all camp alumni from GLOW and YMLP 2018 as well as club leaders and active members who have completed a service project in the fall semester.
At this years event will attend 90 participants from all over Macedonia!
We can’t wait to see all of the campers from our 2018 camps and talk about the impact we have made in our communities since our amazing weeks together over the summer. Of course, we will be having some fun too.
The Impact Summit in 2018 is supported by:
Grant from European Endowment for Democracy
and the overall program in 2018 has been supported by grant from Foundation Open Society Macedonia and sponsorships and donations from our corporate partners:
OKTA as gold sponsor, SASA mine and Tinex as silver sponsors,
Alkaloid, Pekabesko and Zikol as bronze sponsors and
our corporate supporters: TAV Airports, EVN, TTK Bank, Vitaminka,
and from lots of individual donors who fully support our cause and the mission of our youth development program via our crowd funding campaign.
This program since the very beginning has been supported by the US Embassy.

The mission of YMCA and the GLOW & YMLP Youth Development Progrаm is to empower the young people and develop the inherent potential they have by providing them with the skills and knowledge necessary to become active leaders in their communities. This is realized through experiential education that celebrates diversity, builds academic and social competencies.
GLOW & YMLP Clubs are youth-led clubs housed in diverse communities around the country. The clubs provide an opportunity for young men and women to become leaders in their communities. These youth are often GLOW or YMLP Camp alumni who, through GLOW and YMLP Club activities, are able to apply what they have learned at camp about leadership and civic engagement in their communities. Clubs hold two meetings monthly and are responsible for one community service project each school semester.
In 2018, GLOW and YMLP clubs have implemented an exciting new model for alumni of our program to interact with as club members in order to better accommodate accessibility of the GLOW and YMLP program for youth all over the country. This model incorporates two different ways GLOW and YMLP clubs can be realized. GLOW and YMLP Regional clubs create spaces where club leaders and members follow a specific program with enhanced support from YMCA, while GLOW and YMLP Satellite Clubs allow camp alumni to be creative and flexible in the implementation of their clubs in their local communities.
GLOW/YMLP Regional Clubs are the 7 flagship GLOW & YMLP clubs in Macedonia. They receive a higher level of support from YMCA, which includes funding, mentoring, and unique opportunities for training and skill development, and thus have more rigorous national standards which they must complete to fulfill their obligations as a club. The organization of clubs in this way allows YMCA and your club coordinators to be more engaged in your club efforts. The 7 Regional Clubs for the 2018-2019 school year include: Bitola, Kocani, Gevgelija, Skopje, Stip, Struga, and Tetovo.
GLOW and YMLP Satellite Clubs will be found this year in locations like Gostivar, Strumica, and Kumanovo. They are clubs formed by dedicated camp alumni who have stepped up into leadership roles in their community in the best tradition of GLOW and YMLP. These clubs are more flexible in their responsibilities, and while they have the opportunity to receive more tangible support from YMCA also have the option of creating their own club experience. Satellite clubs are welcome to participate in meetings, events, and service projects near their local Regional Club. They also have the opportunity to transition into Regional Clubs in Future years.
WHO DO WE WORK WITH?
- GLOW & YMLP clubs are operated and staffed by 15 adults comprising YMCA staff, Peace Corps volunteers, and GLOW and YMLP camper alumni. Clubs are developed and operated by YMCA with partnership from Peace Corps.
- Clubs are funded in large part by our partners and supporters including: OKTA, Mermeren Kombinat, TAV Airports, Kromberg & Schubert, European Endowment for Democracy and dozens of individual contributors to our annual crowdfunding campaign.
- We have worked together with our friends at the US Embassy since the beginning of the YMLP and GLOW program.
GLOW and YMLP Clubs began in 2000 and 2016 respectively in order to provide camp alumni with an opportunity to apply the lessons they learned at Camps GLOW and YMLP in their communities. With a strong commitment to equality and diversity GLOW and YMLP clubs focus on curriculum tracks like environmentalism, civic responsibility, personal development, leadership, youth employability and women’s empowerment. Clubs prepare and propel youth to compose their leadership skills so that they may become the leaders in their communities, and in the world. GLOW and YMLP Clubs formally partnered with YMCA Bitola in 2016.
